Why study the Bible?

And brought you forth on the day you were born... Psalm 71:6

Let's face it, studying is not the most popular activity in the world. Somehow we've come to view studying as something difficult and unpleasant. True, work is involved. But at its core, studying the Bible will produce such joy in your life that you will be eager to do it on a regular basis. In fact, that's what the word study actually means: " to be eager, or diligent." Once you've gotten into the habit of reading, you need to take the next step and develop a habit of systematic study. You want to be eager to learn more about God's Word.

Look at the benefits:

  1. You will please God. There is a direct correlation between your eagerness to study and God's approval.

    • Work hard so God can approve you. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

  2. You will learn how to live and grow as a Christian. Just as a baby needs and craves his mother's milk, Christians (especially new Christians) must drink in the spiritual nourishment provided by God's Word.
    • You must crave pure spiritual milk so that you can grow into the fullness of your salvation. Cry out for this noursihment as a baby cries for milk (1Peter 2:2)

  3. You will develop spiritual discernment. The only way to know if others are speaking the truth is to know the truth yourself. When the apostle Paul stopped at a church in Berea, he found believers there studying diligently.
    • And the people of Berea were more open minded than those in Thessalonica, and the listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth (Acts 17:11)

  4. You will be able to answer the questions of others. Studying the Bible will help you give clear answers to those who ask you about your faith.
    • And if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it (1 Peter 3:15)
